Matthew Winters is an ELA teacher at Wahlquist Junior High School in Ogden, Utah.  He also is the host of the Edtrex Rewind Podcast with Quin Henderson. Before teaching K-12, he taught at multiple universities.  He loves edtech, writing, and music.

This week we have Greg Cox (@tusz11) a trainer with the Utah State Board of Education in the Student Data Privacy department leading the discussion on Data Privacy! This is a VERY important topic for educators to start thinking about and should be a great chat so please come prepared to share your¬†thoughts on keeping data secure while¬†learning from the rest of the #UTedChat crew. Q1: How many different apps or websites do you and your students use each year? What value does it add to your teaching and/or their learning?

Q2: What are some of the consequences, good or bad, you must make in order to use more technology products and software in the classroom?

Q3: Have you ever read an app or website’s privacy policy to understand what student data they are collecting and what they are doing with the data? Why is this important?

Q4: What is your school or district doing in terms of training to inform faculty about protecting and securing student data?

Q5: What security practices do you and/or your school have in place in order to keep student personally identifiable information (PII) secure?

Q6: Any funny/embarrassing/scary personal stories about being hacked or scammed that you want to share?

 


Greg taught 4th grade for 6 years at Ellis Elementary in Logan, Utah. He currently holds a Master’s in Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences as well as endorsements in ESL, EdTech, and STEM. He works for Kyte Learning, which is a video-based EdTech training platform and is a trainer at the Utah State Board of Education in the Student Data Privacy department. Greg is a former UCET Board member who was a valuable asset to the organization. He is passionate about integrating video into his teaching and training as a way to instruct and entertain.

As we finish with this year’s UCET Conference, I want to take a little bit of time to reflect on how the event went with a few of my favorite people, my #UTedChat family. I want to discuss some of the highlights as well as the lowlights because if we want to help the UCET Conference to continue to grow we need to be open and honest about how it went.¬† And I realize not everyone who participates in #UTedChat tonight will have attended #UCET18 so please don’t let that keep you away. We will also be discussing the Value of having a #PLN, which I believe is CRUCIAL for any and all educators! Plus, even if you weren’t at #UCET18 you still may have some ideas that can help us make the UCET Conference the best education conference around! Q1: We live in an age where we can talk with each other over the Internet via Twitter, video calling, etc. Is it still even important to physically attend conferences?

Q2: For those who were able to attend #UCET18, what was your favorite session? If you didn’t attend, where can you physically go to learn from others?

Q3: We held a physical meet-up for  #UTedChat while at #UCET18 & it was awesome to meet our #PLN IRL. Why is it important to build a #PLN and is it important to meet them #F2F?

Brady Farr has been invested in the Utah school system for seventeen years. He is currently the K-6 Instructional Coach & UVU Partnership Facilitator at¬†Hidden Hollow Elementary School¬†inAlpine School District. Previously, Brady was a K-6 District Instructional Coach assigned to four elementary schools in the Alpine School District. He also served as a Teacher on Special Assignment and K-6 Instructional Coach at Aspen Elementary, a Chinese Immersion school. Prior to those assignments, Brady taught 3rd, 5th, and 6th¬†grades in Alpine, Juab, and Iron County school districts. During much of his teaching career, he has also fulfilled several high school basketball coaching responsibilities. From 2009-2012 Brady was the Head Girls’ Basketball Coach at Juab High School.¬†

Brady is a proud father of five kids, two daughters ages 12 and 10… as well as three boys, ages 5, 3, and 2. He’s lucky to be married to his beautiful wife Victoria for the past seventeen years, who always believes in and supports him in all of his pursuits.¬†
